Nicole Wallbridge Bourmistrova

Nicole Wallbridge Bourmistrova's (b. 1999, Canary Islands) practice is underpinned by a

vibrant, dynamic visual language and love for storytelling. Drawing upon her generational memory of Soviet literature and cartoons, satire features prominently in my work through caricature. Her scenes playfully unpick hierarchies, from the natural world to the private sphere of relationships. Her figures, whether human or animal, seem to be on the precipice, in a state of perpetual motion.

Movement is a key entry point into Bourmistrova's work, seen as a conduit to express not just physical energy but our perpetually shifting boundaries and perceptions. Using fine brushes to create swift, expressive motion, she tries to transcend the limits of paint and the two-dimensional picture. This is directly informed by my professional background in animation, which inspires her to view painting through a non-static lens, ultimately expanding notions of the medium with regard to technology, the pace of contemporary life and our consumption of images.
