Murai’s work is a quest for inner peace in today's materialistic world. She evokes the tradition of the artist as alchemist to balance her mind and body, creating a meditative state to paint–the painting being the space in which to meditate.
Experimenting with minerals, metallic pigments, ash, wax and botanical ephemera, she uses materials that connect her to the earth. Her work represents the idea of dissolving and becoming aligned with nature.
Born in 1999, Murai is a Chinese artist living and working in London. She received a BA in Fine Arts from Kyoto City University, followed by a MA in painting from the Royal College of Art, London. She has participated in a number of group exhibitions in London, Europe and the United States, and was awarded the CityKyoto Shinkin Bank Sakakida Kizo Memorial Scholarship in 2021.
